I have a Compaq Presario V6000 that recently lost it’s capability to access the wireless network. The website shows that there is a hardware problem and extended the warranty period to get it fixed — but my problem didn’t start until the warranty expired. So, other than spend a lot of money getting this fixed, would a USB wi-fi device work?

If the problem is with your built in wireless device, yes, it’ll work fine.
Yes it will
Yes, it will work
Yes a USB or card adapter will work, buy one with software Cd and use it’s program for connecting. Disable the internal card so there is no conflict between the two. Buy one for the new N for better signal strength and coverage, it is back ward compatible with a/b/g.
Hope this helps
Interesting to say the least.
