Ideally I would like something that is freeware, and also something that uses some sort of reasonable compression so the movies aren’t super large files.

I agree that the easiest and cheapest one is windows movie maker and it is freebie. Just go to your start-programmes-windows-and then movie maker.
I think the neatest one for best videos is Sony Vegas too. I love it but as a quick and cheap method its hard to beat movie maker.
Open your sequence image in Adobe Flash and then Export to Movie by click file menu and then click export and save it as your Extension.
