Great Tool
Let's be fair any tool that helps people get out of trouble is a great tool. If it helps one person to save some precious data then it is worth it. It's that simple really, I think it is a great tool and one I always keep a copy of as a just in case mechanism.
You can recover data from crashed hard drive in this way.

Remove the hard drive, put it into an enclosure. And install it into another computer as a slave. Then you can copy your files on it.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data on it with data recovery program to avoid losing your data.I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus corrupted partitions etc.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.

If the hard drive can't be detected, you can try this way.Put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer for overnight. Then while it's still cold plug it into the computer and you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And if needed, run the recovery program to recover your data on it.

If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply data recovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.

There are several ways to see how much ram is in the computer. However if it says 2GB, then its very unlikely its wrong.

By default that laptop does come with 4GB, so if it says 2GB, they could have scammed you. Very common among the smaller repair shops. (I used to work in one, and not even going to tell you some of the stuff we pulled)

If there is any type of corrosion on the RAM that means moisture got in there, and you should have other issues. Especially since RAM is typically in the middle of the underside of the laptop. I would be looking for the receipt for your laptop and get ready to file a complaint with the BBB.

I think this will answer your question:

Your computer will report how much memory is in it in system properties. They cannot change how much it reports, because Windows does automatically. So the number it says is what is in there (or at least working).

If you want to check, most laptops have a panel on the bottom that has one screw, under which you can actually remove or add RAM or see what you have.

Use a registry cleaner, uninstall any active Antivirus programs as they may be eating up your RAM. Use lighter antivirus programs. IOBIT Advanced Systemcare has spyware detection and registry cleaning, Malwarebytes has Malware detection, Microsoft Onecare for a limited time can detect any viruses.

It depends on what's making it slow. Just "doing things" often causes more problems than it causes. (I regularly repair computers that the owners "fixed" or "made faster".) If you're sure it's the registry, CCleaner, run on the registry (menu selection on the left side) will clean the registry. http://www.ccleaner.com/download

But there are many reasons things can be slow. If it's your internet speed, go to http://www.speedtest.net/ If the speed there is okay, there's nothing you can do, except choose servers closer to you. Your provider controls the speed from you to them (which is about what you'll see on speedtest). From there out, it's controlled by the routers on the internet and the amount of traffic there is on the internet - and no one can do anything about that (except, maybe, institute a death penalty for commercial spam).

You will need an ohmeter to check power connections and certain key power connections from the mother board to periperals, a mix of different micro screw drivers, an EM/ESD safe work bench with ESD bracelet, extra ESD packages, a few A+ cert books to do research from, spare parts, it would be good also to download all the manuals for various mother boards designs, disks with diagnotsic tools from various manufacturers, and of course spare parts ranging from ribbon cables to extra screws, maybe a circuit board extractor tool. They may even make ESD gloves that sound like they might be a good thing to have. Also, depending on how in depth you are gonna get a soldering iron kit would be good.

agile's answer below apears to be the most accurate answer, but he did forget the ESD bracelet and ESD bench, its unussual but a static discharge could happen and you want to limit that chance when working with $200.00+ circuit boards

CCleaner for me without a doubt, not only does it clean your registry but it's has a disk cleaner which a lot better than Windows built, in addition to start up editor and other goodies, in addition to that a piece of software called Defraggler from the same company as CCleaner which you may find useful.

CCleaner

Defraggler

And they're both free.

I think a restore to factory settings would solve your problem, but you`ll lose all your personal files.

You probably don`t need to use the disc, try this restore method. >

TOSHIBA RESTORE.

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.

3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.

4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.

5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.

6) Select Recover to out-of-box state click Next again.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

Have you tried starting in safe mode, if you could get in this way you could move the stuff you want to keep to D drive (if you have D drive) D drive won`t be touched during the restore.

There's a free program called Glary Utiliies that has lots of useful tools like a registry defrag and useless files remover and it's a free download. Read about it and download it here. Another reason a computer is slow is due to a virus and this program can detect them too

PC repair huh? Get a good hardware manual. Mark Minasi has a good one but it will cost.
You will need a toolkit - needle nose pliers, screwdrivers (flat, phillips and tork). Bottle of heat paste and anti static strap.
Get a couple of old pc's to practice on. Learn the acronyms, sodimm, ddr ddr2 ddr3 scsi sata ide usb firewire.
Research on os's -- DOS - the basics, Winxp, Unix, OSX.
Learn your network protocols tcp/ip ipx netbios.
Test systems - learn to recover window - there and several ways. Crash them and fix them. Play with the disk partitions, formatting. Play with the BIOS and learn how to set them and update them.
